Actors Join Sea Shepherd in Calling for End to Annual Baby Seal Slaughter
Ottawa — Brigitte Bardot, the legendary actress who became the first celebrity to use her influence to bring the plight of the harp seals to international media attention nearly three decades ago, is returning to Canada for the first time in 29 years to demand an end to the controversial commercial seal hunt, which resumed in 1995 after being shut down since 1984. Bardot will join her old friend, New Brunswick native and Sea Shepherd Conservation Society (SSCS) Founder and President Captain Paul Watson, and Girlfriends TV star and animal activist Persia White, at a press conference on March 22.
Captain Watson, one of the co-founders of Greenpeace, helped organize and lead the first campaign to protect seals on the East Coast of Canada in 1976. During this campaign, Watson and the late Robert Hunter, also a co-founder of Greenpeace, (whose daughter Emily will also be attending the press conference), blocked a sealing ship by standing on the ice in its path. The following year, Watson led the second mission to oppose the seal hunt off the coast of Labrador, this time bringing Brigitte Bardot onto the ice floes with him to witness and help document the slaughter.
“The harp seal hunt is a big, bloody stain on Canada’s reputation,” says Watson. “There is absolutely no excuse for butchering helpless babies – it’s an international disgrace.”

Morrissey boycotts Canada on his Tour March 27
I fully realize that the absence of any Morrissey concerts in Canada is unlikely to bring the Canadian economy to its knees, but it is our small protest against this horrific slaughter," the former Smiths front man wrote in a statement posted on his website.
"As the world knows, this slaughter is about one thing only: making money."
Morrissey is the latest celebrity to voice his dissent. Paul McCartney and his wife Heather Mills ignited a firestorm when they visited Atlantic Canada in early March urging officials to step in to stop the annual seal hunt.
Soon after, 1960s sex kitten Brigitte Bardot followed with a visit to Ottawa.
Prime Minister Stephen Harper has defended the seal hunt saying that Canada is the "victim of a bit of an international propaganda campaign."
Said Harper: "We believe the country is acting responsibly and we'll make sure all rules are enforced."
Aside from not including Canada on his upcoming tour, Morrissey asked fans to boycott Canadian goods.
"It WILL make a difference. As things stand, Canada has placed itself alongside China as the cruelest and most self-serving nation," he wrote.
The hunt officially began last weekend in the Gulf of St. Lawrence.

"Pamela Anderson asks PM Stephen Harper for a meeting after hosting duties at Juno".
TORONTO - Calling the seal hunt "barbaric," bombshell actress Pamela Anderson has asked for a meeting with Prime Minister Stephen Harper following her hosting duties at Sunday's Juno Awards in Halifax.
"As a proud Canadian who frequently travels abroad, I am alarmed that people are starting to see Canada as a country more beholden to a pack of greedy hunters and to the seal-skin 'fashion' whims of a few countries than to the massive international outcry against the hunt," Anderson, a vocal member of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, said in a letter faxed to Harper's office.
"One of the biggest problems facing the U.S. government is appearing aloof about its own hostile behaviour; I'd hate to see that happen north of the border too."
The actor and model said she's collected thousands of signatures via an online PETA petition protesting the seal hunt.
Anderson, who is from Ladysmith, B.C., said she wants to visit Ottawa on Monday to meet with Harper.
The seal hunt, which started last weekend, has attracted plenty of celebrity protesters this year, including former Beatle Paul McCartney and his wife Heather Mills. Brigitte Bardot visited Ottawa earlier this month asking for a meeting with government officials but was refused. Singer Morrissey has said he won't include Canada on any tours until the seal hunt ends.
Harper has repeatedly defended the seal hunt, saying that Canada is the "victim of a bit of an international propaganda campaign."
A call to his office Tuesday was not immediately returned.

| | | | Toronto's observer returns home after witnessing the seal hunt - March 28 | | Toronto's Melissa Tkachyk, Canadian Campaigns Officer for the World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA) returned to Toronto last night having witnessed the seal hunt first hand this weekend. "Like the sealers, we had difficulty finding the seals at first, so poor are the ice conditions this year in the Gulf," recounts Tkachyk. "From our vantage point in the helicopter, we could see for miles, but we saw little for the longest time apart from a few scattered blocks of ice. We spotted the sealing boats first, at least a dozen. Thin trails of blood could be seen in the water behind several of these boats as the sealers used their gaff hooks to drag seals aboard--hopefully dead, though we know from past accounts that this is sadly not always the case." In 2001, an independent veterinary study concluded that in 42% of the cases they examined, the seal did not show enough evidence of cranial injury to guarantee unconsciousness at the time of skinning, meaning that, in all likelihood, animals were skinned alive. WSPA has serious concerns about the animal welfare implications of the Canadian seal hunt given past eyewitness accounts of sealing regulations being flouted, animals being shot and wounded, clubbed but not rendered unconscious or even skinned alive. WSPA further objects to the commercial use of wildlife, particularly where the primary reason for the hunt is still fur, which the charity views as an unnecessary or frivolous reason to kill animals. Canada's annual seal hunt is the largest slaughter of marine mammals in the world. More than a million seals have been killed during the past three years. The Department of Fisheries and Oceans has set a quota for this year's hunt of 335,000. This year's hunt got underway last Saturday morning. Hampered by poor ice conditions, sealers are believed to have killed 3100 seals on the opening day of the hunt, much less than in previous years. Adds Tkachyk: "Most of the seals we saw being killed are young pups, just 2-3 weeks old, and most have yet to fully moult their fluffy white coats. Under Canadian law, the pups are fair game as soon as they moult their first white hairs at 12 days old. At this age, the pups are just learning how to swim. It was horrifying to see these little seals trying to stay afloat on small melting ice floes while the hunters were after them." ________________________________________________________ | |

$16 Million US dollars offered as reward to the Canadian Government to stop seal hunt !- April 4
NEW CANAAN, Conn., April 4 - In a just-released letter to Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper, Cathy Kangas, CEO and Founder of PRAI Beauty, a global beauty company, has offered to raise the $16 million that Canadian fishermen will realize from the sale of the pelts of slaughtered baby
seals.
Ms. Kangas wrote: "If you stop this year's hunt immediately, we will provide you with the $16 million to be distributed at your discretion." The Canadian government has stated repeatedly that the seal hunt provides needed off-season income to the fishermen in the communities of the Gulf of St.
Lawrence and Newfoundland.
Ms. Kangas also proposed working with the Canadian government to institute a program to buy back existing fishing licenses and launch a program of eco-tourism in Northeastern Canada to replace the seal hunt. "Canadian fishermen could earn more money serving as park rangers for high end tours to
Canada to see the beautiful spectacle of seals giving birth on the ice floes,"she noted. She said that whale-watching tours in Canada have been very successful attracting visitors.
"We are providing you with an alternative to what Paul McCartney called 'a stain on the character of the Canadian people.' If this is really simply an economic problem, then take our offer," Mrs. Kangas stated in her letter. The money, she pointed out, will be raised from private citizens and animal
protection groups worldwide which oppose the seal hunt including The Humane Society of the United States, which has more than nine million members.
Mrs. Kangas added: "With the worldwide boycott of Canadian seafood, the television coverage of baby seals being clubbed to death for their pelts, and the involvement of high-profile celebrities such as Heather and Paul McCartneyand Bridget Bardot, one would think that Stephen Harper would welcome an economic solution to the seal hunt. We are willing to negotiate in good faith. However, should he choose to ignore my letter and continue with the hunt, we need to ask the world what will it take for Canada to end this barbaric practice?"
Cathy Kangas has championed animal welfare issues for more than twenty years. She presently serves on the Regional Council of IFAW (International Fund for Animal Welfare) and as an advisor to HSUS (Humane Society of the United States).
As CEO and Founder of PRAI Beauty, a global skin and beauty care company sold through the Internet and home shopping networks, she created "Beauty With A Cause." Under this program, her company contributes a portion of its proceeds every month to a different animal protection organization.
Among the many animal protection organizations supported by Ms. Kangas through PRAI Beauty are: Animals Asia, which seeks to end the slaughter of cats and dogs in China for food; IFAW for the campaign to save the whales; Save the Chimps, which provides a sanctuary for chimps formerly used by the USAir Force; The Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee; the United Pegasus Foundation
for retired racehorses; the Wolf Conservation Center, Best Friends in Utah, the largest animal sanctuary in the world; and SPANA, which cares for working animals worldwide.

| DFO takes a pass on buyout offer to sealers ! il - April 5 |
|
| The Canadian government is taking a pass on an American businesswoman's offer to pay sealers not to kill any more harp seals. Cathy Kangas, the founder and chief executive officer of Prai Beauty, has written to Prime Minister Stephen Harper with an offer to raise $16 million, to replace the money sealers earn from the hunt. She said various groups opposed to the hunt could raise money to supplement sealers' incomes. Steve Outhouse, communications director for the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, said the federal government will not be taking Kangas up on her offer. "We're not interested," Outhouse told the St. John's Telegram. "This is another example of someone with lots of money trying to tell people how to live their lives." Outhouse said while $16 million would replace sealers' incomes, it is far less than the overall value of the industry. ______________________________________________________________________________ |

Last news from the front
Sir Paul Mc Cartney and his wife Lady Heather Mills McCartney, went to the ice on the Eastern part of Canada, to meet the seal pups that in few days will be clubbed or axed to death.
They had an interview with Larry King where they confronted the Premier of Newfoundland.
The McCartneys, urged the Canadian Government to stop this brutal slaughter and proposed alternatives that would benefit the fisherman and of course the seals. It was a great debate and Heather Mc Cartney defended the seals with all her heart.
Please, if you miss this show, check on the link below for a transcript of that show:

Just a few days ago, there was not enough ice on the Gulf of St. Lawrence, preventing the sealers to reach the young harp seals. In a region where the Canadian government set a quota of 45,000 seals, only 3,000 were taken this season. The warm weather also cut the number of pilgrimages by animal lovers to see newborn harp seals.
In Canada, seals are hunted off Newfoundland, Labrador, Iles de la Madeleine, the Quebec North Shore, Cape Breton Island and at aboriginal communities in the North. But unusually large patches of open water and slushy ice this year isolated the seals.
The International Fund for Animal Welfare say that many of the mammals may have died because the thin ice may have resulted in fewer places for the seals to give birth.
The ice conditions are normal for the much larger annual seal hunt scheduled for April 10 on the Atlantic. The quota set there and in other parts of eastern Canada are of over 250,000 harp and hooded seals.
About 1,500 seal pups were swept out to sea and drowned by a tidal surge off Canada's east coast this week after a lack of ice cover meant their mothers were forced to give birth on a small island, environment officials said on Friday.
A resident on the island described how the mother seals had frantically tried to push their tiny pups back on to land as they floundered in the storm-tossed water.
Grey seals in the Northumberland Strait -- which lies between the provinces of Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island -- usually give birth on the pack ice which forms in winter.
But the extreme warm conditions this year mean there is no ice in the strait, so some seals had to give birth on the beaches of Pictou Island. Unusually high tides hit the island this week after a major storm.
"The majority of those seals born above the high water mark have been lost. It is estimated that of about 2,000 pups that were born prior to the storm, we lost about 1,500,".
Television showed hundreds of dead seal pups litteres of one of Pictou Island's beaches.
French film star turned animal rights campaigner Brigitte Bardot tearfully begged Canada on Wednesday to stop the annual harp seal hunt, during which about 325,000 young seal pups will be shot or beaten to death.
"before I die I want to see this massacre ended", she told a news
conference, sitting in front of a poster that showed a giant seal clubbing a blood-covered human baby.
The hunt, which takes place on ice floes off the coast of eastern
Canada, is due to start on Friday or Saturday. Ottawa denies the hunt
is cruel and says it helps the local economy while keeping the seal
population healthy and in check.
To try to stop the hunt each year, activists release gory pictures of
hunters crushing seal skulls with big clubs. Anti-hunt campaigners are
calling on some major U.S. restaurant chains to boycott Canadian
seafood until the hunt stops.
Bardot, who started campaigning against the hunt some 30 years ago,
cried quietly as aides played a video showing graphic shots of young
seals screaming in agony and drowning in their own blood after being
attacked by hunters.
Seal-hunt activists complain police abusing rights
Rebecca Aldworth of the Humane Society of the United States, said yesterday she has been told she cannot return to the ice floes in the Gulf of St. Lawrence while an investigation is under way into possible violations of hunt regulations.
Ms. Aldworth, along with six other hunt protesters and a freelance cameraman working for Reuters Television, were arrested Sunday, the second day of the annual hunt, for coming too close to a sealing boat. They were later released, but video footage shot by the Humane Society was seized and the group does not know when it will be returned.
"I'm a Canadian and I'm humiliated in the presence of these international observers that our government would choose to sink to these levels to ensure that the seal hunt can continue in secrecy," said Ms. Aldworth, a native of Newfoundland and Labrador.
Ms. Aldworth insisted that she did not come too close to a sealing operation.
She said a sealing boat manoeuvred close to the observers' small boat, forcing them within the 10-metre buffer zone. The sealing boat was carrying RCMP and Fisheries officers.
Reporters covering the hunt from the ice floes confirmed that several sealing boats charged observer vessels.
On Saturday, seal guts were hurled into a boat carrying mostly journalists. On Sunday, a sealing boat rammed one of the protesters' inflatable Zodiacs, damaging a propeller.
A representant of the DFO, said no charges have been laid. He said an investigation will take several weeks or months to reach a conclusion.
"The decision to charge or not to charge is a long process," Mr. Simon said, adding that the seized video footage will be analyzed for evidence and will be held until the issue of charges is resolved.
He said Ms. Aldworth and other protesters still can apply for observer permits, which are renewed on a daily basis. However, he said the investigation into the alleged violations would be a factor in deciding whether to renew her permits and those of the others.
This year's Gulf hunt got off to a slow start because of poor ice conditions and low numbers of seals.
The quota for this year's Gulf hunt is 91,000 seals. Another 234,000 can be taken in a second hunt that begins in April off Newfoundland and Labrador.
